From Punjab to the World Record: The Inspiring Story of Navdeep Singh Nijjar

ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਖਸ਼ ਦੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੁਸੀਬਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਪੱਧਰ ’ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਂਮ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਇਹ ਹੈ ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿੱਜਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ – ਇੱਕ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਖੱਬੀ ਲੱਤ ਦੀ 75% ਅਪੰਗਤਾ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵਰਲਡ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਬਣਾਇਆ।

"ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿੱਝਰ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਰਾਸਤਗੋ ਨੇੜੇ ਭੋਗਪੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਬਚਪਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਖੱਬੀ ਲੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਲਤ ਟੀਕਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੱਤ ਦੀਆਂ 75% ਮਾਸਪੇਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ। ਇਸ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

"16 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ, 1990 ਵਿੱਚ, ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਆ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼ ਨਾ ਆਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਖੱਬੀ ਲੱਤ ਦੀ ਅਪੰਗਤਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਮ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਸੀ। ਬਹੁਤ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਫਾਰਮ ’ਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ $4.25 ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਘੰਟਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਸੀ।

ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਸਿੱਖ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਆਪਣੀ ਅਪੰਗਤਾ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਜਨੂਨ ਸੀ।

ਇਸੇ ਜਨੂੰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ 2019 ਵਿੱਚ, ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਖੱਬੀ ਲੱਤ ਦਾ ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ। ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 6 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਬੈਡ ’ਤੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਆ ਗਈ। ਪਰ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਨੂਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ’ਤੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਆਉਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਿੰਮ ਜਾਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦਾ ਫਲ 12 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2024 ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਜਦੋਂ ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਡਰੱਗ ਟੈਸਟਡ Bench Press ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਕੰਪੀਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ। 

ਫਿਰ ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿੱਝਰ ਨੇ 2025 ਵਿੱਚ, ਵਰਲਡ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ Bench Press ’ਚ ਗੋਲਡ ਮੈਡਲ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ। 

ਇਸ ਵੱਡੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੁਣ, International Powerlifting League ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ 10-11 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2025 ਨੂੰ ਲਾਸ ਵੇਗਾਸ ’ਚ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ Pro Powerlifting Competition ਚ ਭਾਗ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਸੱਦਾ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿੱਜਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ‘ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ’ਤੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2025 ਦੇ ਕੰਪੀਟੀਸ਼ਨ ’ਚ ਵੀ ਵਰਲਡ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Today we will talk about a person who overcame adversity and made a name for himself on the world stage with his hard work and faith in God. This is the story of Navdeep Singh Nijjar – an athlete who set a world record despite having 75% paralysis in his left leg.

"Navdeep Singh Nijjar was born in Bhogpur near Rastgo village in Jalandhar district of Punjab. Once during his childhood, during an illness, due to a doctor's mistake, 75% of the muscles in his leg were damaged. This made his life very difficult.

"At the age of 16, in 1990, Navdeep Singh came to America with his family. At that time, he did not know English at all. But due to his lack of English and the paralysis of his left leg, it was very difficult for him to get work. After a lot of struggle, he got work on a farm, where he got only $4.25 per hour.

 Navdeep Singh was religious from the beginning. He helped martyr families and needy Sikh families a lot. Despite his disability, he worked hard to support the family, but he had a passion for sports.

To fulfill this passion, Navdeep Singh underwent a left leg surgery in 2019. After the surgery, he had to stay in bed for 6 months, which caused a lot of weakness in the body. But his passion for sports and faith in Waheguru encouraged him. After the surgery, Waheguru Ji showed such grace on him that soon his health started improving, due to which he started going to the gym and worked hard continuously.

He got the fruits of his hard work on October 12, 2024, when Navdeep Singh won the US Drug Tested Bench Press National Competition. 

Then Navdeep Singh Nijjar won the Gold Medal in Bench Press in 2025, setting a world record. 

 After this great achievement, the International Powerlifting League has now invited him to participate in the Pro Powerlifting Competition to be held in Las Vegas on 10-11 October 2025.

Navdeep Singh Nijjar said, ‘I have full faith in God, and the hard work continues. I hope to set a world record in the October 2025 competition as well.
